I recently got a portfolio book printed showcasing KGW surfboard furniture. The 24-page book is image heavy and includes some of my recent work. I am excited about how the book turned out and I hope to have it available in stores soon.

Surfboard Bar Stools

I recently designed and built 5 custom surfboard bar stools for one of our long time client’s backyard. Knowing that these stools were going to be used outside and slid back and forth across concrete, I decided to use a brush-on polyurethane on the bottom of the legs to prevent them from splintering over time. I was quite happy with the results and plan to start incorporating this feature on alll our outdoor furniture.

As you can tell from the pictures below, Karl’s Good Wood takes Halloween pretty serious. After passing out candy and scaring a few kids I decided to participate in a costume contest at a local bar. I got 2nd place, losing to a Nerd in a dance off. Jelly (and just about everyone else in the bar) laughed when they saw me, The Deep Sea Diver start dancing to “Monster Mash”. Maybe I’ll get some dance lessons from Spiderman and Spiderwoman so I can take home 1st place next year!

KGW Chair on Display

You can check out a Karl’s Good Wood surfboard chair at the Atrium Gallery in Ventura. The chair is part of the Recycled Re-Purposed Show where artists are encouraged to use discards in pieces of art. The chair is available for sale and is on display through the 2^nd of December.

The Swim Journal recently wrote an article about us in their July issue. The full page spread goes in-depth about our company and how we incorporate recycled surfboard into our furniture. It’s a great article and they even dropped in a picture of one of our chairs!

It’s Fair Time

This weekend I will be entering one of my surfboard chairs in to the 2009 Ventura County Fair. If accepted, it will be on display in the Professional Arts building August 4^th through the 16^th. The chair is made out of redwood and a recycled surfboard. In order to compete with the funnel cakes and turkey legs, I decided to go all out and drop in two custom made fish tanks. They fit securely under the removable armrests and will be home to two beta fish.

Work Break

Tick Tock

This past summer I built a surfboard chair out of reclaimed Blue Gum and Red River Eucalyptus. The wood is milled in Santa Barbara, CA and it’s some of the toughest stuff to work with. I went through several drill bits and screws and even burned up one of my battery operated screw guns. Despite the difficulties, the end result made for a beautiful piece of furniture. After I finished the chair I had some scraps left over so I decided to make some longboard wall clocks.

Fishtank Surfboard Bench

Here is a bench I made from pine, a recycled longboard (bought it at an antique store broken in half) and a 10 gallon fish tank. The lid, hand painted to match the board, comes off allowing you to easily feed your fish and clean the tank. I hope to have a fishtank surfboard chair completed in late 2009.
